The Golden Globes
As a connoisseur of film and fashion, I am happy that there are a few nights in the year that the two come together.
The Golden Globes can sometimes be considered as the most boring of all the awards shows because of the continuous awards being given out and no musical performances during the entire night. However, this is not what the Golden Globes are all about. It’s more about celebrating the creativity and ingeniuos minds of filmmakers and actors whom bring us one of our favorite things to do in life, watch movies. And tonight, the good ones were highlighted.
As I was watching the pre-show, (i preferred Giuliana Rancic’s enthusiasm and professionalism on E!), a few fashion perfections stood out to me. At the top were Emma Stone and Claire Danes both in Calvin Klein Collection. The designer created very simplistic dresses for these nominees to wear but chose to do it on a bright color palette. Stone chose a cap sleeve, open back orange number (my absolute favorite), while Danes chose a bright pink halter from the fashion house.
Angelina Jolie finally wore another color other than black. Her stunning sparkly green Atelier Versace brought her to life. During the show, the camera cuts to her and Brad Pitt showing their normalty as a couple as well as when Jolie re-applies her lipstick. One rule I like to live by, always carry lipstick in your purse.
Even though I accept her eccentricity, Helena Bonham Carter was definitely on the bottom of the list wearing an off-putting, cringing Vivienne Westwood get-up with mismatched shoes. Mismatched meaning one green one and one red one. Uhh.
As far as the men go, I have to go with a man who opted for a classy instead of traditional look. Standing out in a sea of penguins, Jeremy Renner’s sleek tux included a navy dress shirt, bow tie and well fitted blazer. This man is stylish.
Now as the awards got started, host Ricky Gervais’ cynical jokes did not seem to be approved by the in-house audience. A crack about Robert Downey Jr.’s troubled past while in jail and rehab brought out a backlash by the “Iron Man” actor. He called Gervais’ performance “mean-spirited.” And I would have to agree.
Some big winners of the night included musical TV show, Glee, who won Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Television Series for Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch.
”The Social Network” came out big winning four awards including, Best Motion Picture and Best Director. The latter went to David Fincher. It is surprising how far we have come in this world. I never thought a movie about Facebook would be as outstanding as it is and be the big winner of the night.
I was also routing for “Black Swan” for it’s intense story and phenomenal performances by the cast. Even though they did not win as much as I would have liked, Natalie Portman still grabbed the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama. And she deserved it. I have not seen such a great film in this world for a long time and as I was in the theater clenching the arm rests turning my head away from the sound and close ups of the nail clipping and the creepy mom, this film definitely did what it was supposed to do, it created emotion in others and will keep people talking for a long, long time.
I appreciate all of you who read this and it’s okay to disagree with anything I say. This blog is only my opinion. It’s a free country and you are to have your own opinion too.
